Particle tracking

The pixels in our devices are 55×55 µm2 in area and typically 300 µm tall. Ionizing particles such as electrons, pions, mions, protons, etc. can travel in the sensor at longer distances than what is the pixel size. The particles deposit energy along their way energy that is higher than the energy threshold in pixels (>4 keV). Therefore, such particles create visible tracks in the detector. The deposited energy can be moreover measured if the detector is operated in the Time-Over-Threshold mode. Analysis of these tracks provides information about the detected radiation.
